The Stanford Research Institute Master Plan transformed SRI’s historic Menlo Park campus into a 1.3-million-square-foot speculative research and development campus. Developed for Alexandria Real Estate Group, the project combines a master plan with a feasibility study for the long-term redevelopment of the existing research facility.
SRI has occupied the Menlo Park site since 1947. Founded by Stanford University in 1946 as the Stanford Research Institute, the organization initially operated on the Stanford campus before moving into buildings from the former Dibble Army Hospital, a World War II military hospital that had recently been declared surplus.
Over the following decades, SRI became closely associated with the emergence of Silicon Valley as a center for technological research. Work at SRI included the development of the first computer mouse and early interactive computing systems, while SRI’s Menlo Park computer became the second node on ARPANET and received one of the network’s first transmissions from UCLA in 1969. Later research at SRI also led to technologies including Siri.
The master plan addresses both the scale of a contemporary research campus and the redevelopment of a site with a long history of scientific and technological innovation. The plan establishes a framework for new laboratory and research space while allowing the campus to evolve over time in response to changing research uses and tenants.
